Salon Wall House

Taikkyi, Myanmar

The client’s brief called for a concrete house with a basement bedroom on his farm. My task was to craft a spatial narrative that choreographs views of the landscape while establishing a gradual progression of privacy.

The design is anchored by four shear walls that form the spatial core, organizing served and service areas and creating a spiral circulation sequence that progressively unveils increasing levels of privacy from the garage to the basement bedroom. A lightwell is sectionally cut through the bathrooms to channel natural light to the basement.

Experientially, the intention for a monolithic concrete front façade is to ease the visual overstimulation of the landscape and briefly establishes the building as a focal point of guests’ first impression. From the garage, a carefully positioned opening offers the first framed glimpse of the landscape. As guests move into the living room, a sequence of salon wall framed views unfolds, each highlighting a distinct feature of the landscape. Each visual moment is to create pauses that allow the host to showcase the beauty of the landscape.
